Dear Mr. Bourdon,
You are probably wondering why I am writing to you. Well, after a small phone conversation with one of your colleagues at NIREX I was told you are the one handling all kinds of complaints directed at your company. That is the exact point of my letter, to complain. However, before I start, I think it is only polite to briefly introduce myself, so you know who you are dealing with.
My name is Elisa Delson. I have been living in Clive all my life and never got tired of the town. It is a perfect place for bringing up my three small cute children. My husband is a guitarist in a band waiting for a record deal. Although he says they are on the verge of signing, it seems to me unlikely after hearing this for past ten years. It is not easy to feed a family only with money from the few gigs he has and my salary of a schoolteacher. But do not get me wrong, I am neither whining nor looking for sympathy, my life has been great so far. At least until I have heard about your company’s plans.
Ever since I have known NIREX wanted to build a store of nuclear waste near my beloved town my life started to spin downhill. I am tired of hearing that we all are going to die due to radioactivity. It has already got to the point that I cannot have a normal conversation with my neighbours anymore. People are freaking out, because of the lack of information, you provided us with, and stating over and over again that “this is only about low-level waste” is not going to calm anybody.
However, I would like to clarify one thing first. I am not against the usage of nuclear power plants, even though it might seem so. I know it is a better way to obtain energy and I am also aware of the alarming lack of fossil fuels. So this is all fine with me, I am not going to tie myself with chain to the first power plant I see and claim its shutting down. The only thing that really bothers me is that you decided to store your waste near my town.
You can assure me how many times you want that no, this is not technically waste from a power plant and yes, it should be safe, but I am not going to change my mind. I cannot bear knowing that there is something potentially very dangerous near my children and me. How can we be sure that everything is sealed properly and nothing can get into the soil? I certainly do not want to wonder why my grandchild has two heads instead of one. You might think I am a hysterical woman for all I care but there are plenty of catastrophic scenarios in my head and I do not care if they are even possible or not. The danger is too high and nobody can convince me otherwise.
Apart from the danger I am sure it brings, there is another thing I would like to mention. My town is surrounded by a beautiful, almost untouched nature. There are plenty of trees and green plants in general everywhere around and I really do not want them to be destroyed just because you do not have any other place to bury your waste. I am not willing to trade my wonderful view for some concrete monsters and listen to a deafening noise while they are being built for God knows how long. I want my children to grow up in a beautiful nature and not near some low-level waste.
I sincerely hope I got my point across. To prove you I am not the only one who is not happy with your plans I took time and visited some of my neighbours. They all willingly signed my petition, which is attached to this letter. This is just for starters though, I am willing to do much more to protect my surroundings and be sure I will fight and will not give up easily. That would be all I wanted to say, so thank you for hearing me out. I am looking forward to your response and not so much to further dealing with your company.
